apartment at The Big Horse Lounge - 10/29/00 |

The Opinion |
|
apartment is not the average band. They strive to add more than a touch of theater to their music. Leading the proceedings is Caila Lipovsky, whose schizophrenic vocal stylings go from silky smooth to (intentionally) shrieking faster than the blink of an eye. Christine Heinisch provides the lush keyboards, trumpet, and backing vocals. Natalie Nguyen adds a new dimension to the music with her cello, as well as backing vocals. James Wallace and Jeff Kelly supply the backbone with James on upright bass and backing vocals and Jeff on drums. All this is punctuated with Ariella Lake's funky fretwork on guitar. It took a couple of songs for them to lose themselves. But once they did, they had control of the stage and the room. apartment puts on a performance that commands attention. The audience is trapped in the web of music spun by the band. apartment puts a larger-than-life spin on every song, by adding an underlying current of theatrics to their performance. Musically, they run the gamut. But every style they pull influence from is combined into a new creation that is sure to please the audience. By combining gifted musicians playing both standard and unconventional instruments, apartment has found a formula for success that is far from formulaic. Throw in a theater-type energy and the audience is left with no choice but to be enraptured. |

Nutshell Review |

More than a concert, apartment delivers a musical spectacle that exhilarates the audience. |
