The Opinion |
|
apartment uses "art band" as a way to describe themselves. Too often when a band assumes that moniker, they use it as a license to be pretentious and to make music that is only accessible to themselves. This self-titled EP by apartment proves that a band can consider themselves an art band and still make great music. The members of apartment don't put on airs and they deliver four songs that are not only listenable, but extremely enjoyable. The songs on the album are definitely unique. Through the use of instruments that aren't common to rock, they weave a sonic tapestry that envelops the listener. Although they have since replaced Micah McClain with Jeff Kelly on drums, lost Joe Exley, and added the upright bass of James Wallace, the disc does an excellent job of capturing the apartment experience. The highlight of the album is "The Apartment Song." That track serves to really showcase all the talent in the band. It's a well-crafted song that displays the skills of the musicians in the band. More than a song, it's the closest thing to theater that can come out of a CD player. The music punctuates the lyrical poem as it goes from a slow gait to a full-blown gallop and back again. apartment is not the typical band and this album is not the typical album. But they don't sacrifice the music to prove that point. They use their own brand of style to create more than just songs. apartment creates music that really gets to the listener, providing an album that makes an impact on the listener. |
