The Detholz! at Gunther Murphy's - 10/26/00 |

The Opinion |

How many people would be entertained by covers of a bunch of cheesy songs? All of them, if it's done by The Detholz! (pronounced "death holes"). For their Halloween show at Gunther Murphy's, The Detholz! performed as "The Jukebox Of The Dead." Covering such "classics" as Kool And The Gang's "Celebration" and Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It," they put on a performance that was seriously entertaining. The Detholz! managed to take these songs and put on their unique stamp, providing the audience with surprisingly good music, as well as many laughs. When the audience finally recognized the opening number as "Celebration," peals of laughter and howls of approval rippled through the crowd. The Detholz! gripped the audience with their performance. When you add an amusing "sleight of hand" performance and the presence of a newspaper-clad behemoth providing ominous commentary between songs, the audience was never released from the performance. With the power to put on this kind of performance, The Detholz! have the potential to truly amaze the audience when they perform their own music. Any band that can muster that kind of energy and musicianship playing a slew of cheezy covers is sure to entertain the audience when playing songs in which they've invested themselves. |
