PREMIUM at Double Door - 10/18/00

Reviewed By Eric J. Olsen

The Opinion

Power. That's what emanates from the stage as soon as PREMIUM started playing. These guys channel all their energy and aggression into the music and it shows. With the two Scotts, Spidale and Russell, providing the high end with blazing guitars, Mike J laying down the ominous backbeat with Turan Yon filling out the low end with his powerful bass. Meanwhile, robin@kiefer.com belts out the vocals with a voice that's both raw and extremely melodic at the same time.

As if the energy flowing from the band to the audience and back wasn't a moving enough experience, they sounded awesome. They faithfully recreated their songs, albeit supercharged with energy. The only odd thing was it was a CD release party for their album "Lucky" and yet they only played less than a handful of songs from the album. A lot of songs were newer than their brand new album. Granted you have to applaud artists that always want to move forward to new material, but the audience should at least get to hear the songs once before they drop off the set list.

Regardless of which songs they played, PREMIUM put on an awesome show. The band was extremely tight. Robin excelled at getting the crowd into the show, which provided the energy that enabled them all to play in that inspired zone where everything clicks. When a band is able to sound that good and draw that kind of energy from the crowd, it's always a winning combination.

Even though the energy and music are the two key factors to a great show, PREMIUM provided the little extras that make it a wildy entertaining experience. From the confetti cannons to the scantily clad woman throwing PREMIUM paraphernalia to the crowd to the hordes of fans that rushed on the stage during the final song, these guys know what makes a great show. Not to mention the ability to back that up.

Nutshell Review

Unbelievable sound at a frenetic pace, Beavis and Butthead would be proud.
