The Opinion

Swizzle Tree's self-titled album contains twelve well-crafted pop songs that have a sharp rock edge to them. It's nothing revolutionary, but it's a good album. Swizzle Tree has definitely mastered the art of the pop-song hook. They just get stuck in your head and you find yourself wanting to listen to the album again.

Not that they should be written off as a poppy sensation. The musicianship is high and the songs do have more meat to them than just pop hooks. The strongest point of the album is the harmonies. There are no weak songs on the album. Every track holds its own. With guests, Eric Remschneider on cello, Ted Ansani on vocals, and Jeff Jacobs on keyboards, Swizzle Tree's sound is nicely rounded out.

Their lyrics vary. Some good, some whacky (like "been put down down like a joint when I see a cop" from "Open Invitation"). Although overall, it's the harmonies and melodies that attract the listener, not what they're actually singing about. And there is no short supply of that on this album.

As you'd expect from an album filled with clever pop songs, the production quality is high. They've got a great sound on this album that spotlights the strengths of Swizzle Tree. This self-titled album by Swizzle Tree has few shortcomings and gives the listener some great moments.

Nutshell Review

A smart pop-rock album filled with great hooks and harmonies.
